The Dutch subsidy landscape is generous and almost deliberately opaque. The result is predictable: the businesses with the time and advisors to navigate it claim the money, and everyone else assumes it isn't for them.
WBSO is the clearest example. It is a tax credit for R&D, and 'R&D' is broader than founders assume — meaningful product or process development often qualifies. Many SMEs doing exactly this kind of work never file.
MIT and regional development funds add more, especially for innovation and sustainability projects. The applications reward clear program logic and a credible budget — which is precisely where most self-filed applications fall down.
The honest position is this: not every business qualifies, and no one can guarantee approval. But the cost of finding out is low, and the upside is real money returned to the business. It is worth one proper look.
